Exploring the Diversity of the American West: A Review of the “Many Wests” Exhibit

If you don’t already know, Salt Lake City has some great art installations. One of which is the Utah Museum of Fine Art. They house regular permanent and rotating exhibitions. Currently, one of the more intriguing collections is called “Many Wests

“Many Wests” is an exhibition that explores the vast and diverse landscape of the American West through the eyes of contemporary artists. The show features over 80 works of art in a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, and video, that challenge traditional notions of what the West is and what it means to be Western.

The exhibition is on display at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts from February 5th to June 11th, 2021. This gives you plenty of time to plan your visit and experience the art firsthand.

One of the things that makes “Many Wests” so compelling is the diversity of the artists and their perspectives. The exhibition includes works from Indigenous artists who have lived in the West for generations and those who have more recently migrated to the area. There are also works from non-Indigenous artists who have been inspired by the West’s natural beauty, history, and mythology.

A notable work is Wendy Red Star’s photographic series, “Four Seasons”. The series features images of the artist dressed in traditional Crow clothing in various Western landscapes. The photographs challenge stereotypes of Native American people while also celebrating their rich cultural heritage.

The exhibition also includes works by artists who address environmental issues and the impact of human activity on the Western landscape. Of course, we could tell you about all the art, but then you wouldn’t need to go. You should go.

Many Wests is a must-see exhibition for anyone interested in contemporary art or the American West. The collection challenges visitors to rethink their assumptions about the West and its people and encourages them to consider the region’s past, present, and future.

In addition to the art on display, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts offers a variety of educational programs related to the exhibition. These include artist talks, panel discussions, and guided tours. Visitors can also pick up a copy of the exhibition catalog, which features essays by curators and scholars that provide deeper insights into the works on display.

Overall, Many Wests is a powerful and thought-provoking exhibition that should not be missed. Whether you are a longtime resident of the West or simply interested in the region, this exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the people, landscapes, and cultures that make up this complex and dynamic part of the country. We think you’ll enjoy it. We did.
