We spend a few hundred billion dollars on home remodeling every year. That works out to over $1,000 per person.
With that much money invested, most of us want to make sure we get things right. But, as with most design forms and personal taste, there are no set rules for getting it right.
Even inexact fields have some order to them, though. We can offer several tips and bits of advice that tend to make the process of remodeling easier and more fruitful in the long run.
1. Don’t Skip the Prep Work
A lot goes into preparing for home remodeling, from planning to budgeting and more. All of this is necessary because projects can get derailed when they’re not planned out.
If we don’t buy supplies ahead of time, the store could run out of them, and then you have to choose something else on the fly. Choices made on short notice are often more expensive than those made with a plan in mind.
2. Set Up a Realistic Budget
Nothing kills a project faster than an inadequate budget, so it’s essential to research how much money you might need.
A realistic budget takes every factor into account. If even one thing is off, it could raise your budget quite a bit. For example, installing a kitchen sink costs a few hundred dollars, and that’s if you don’t include the price of the sink itself.
3. Consult an Expert (Ask for References)
One of the best tips for home remodeling that we can offer is to talk to experts. ‘Expert’ is a somewhat broad term, and in this case, it can refer to a few people.
Plumbers, electricians, etc., may help in some areas, movers in others, and even hardware store employees in a few cases. Someone you might not think of, though, is your realtor.
A real estate agent’s primary job is to sell houses, but that involves knowing what your client wants and figuring out how to get it in the simplest way possible. They also have area knowledge because each city may have different circumstances and slightly different laws and regulations in play.
4. Consider a Multi-Functional Space
Sometimes, it helps to make a space serve multiple functions within your home. This is a common feature in modern homes, and in many cases, we don’t think about it. For instance, how many houses have you been in where the kitchen was also the dining room?
We often see living rooms that are also game rooms or home theaters. Again, it’s a great way to save space and money.
