Fall in Salt Lake City means cooler mornings, changing leaves in the canyons, and a packed calendar of festivals, markets, and Halloween attractions. Whether you’re looking for things to do in SLC this Fall or just want to know what’s worth the drive this season, here’s a rundown of the fall events Salt Lake City locals actually show up for.
The Utah Humanities Book Festival kicks things off, running through October at venues across the state. It’s Utah’s longest-running literary festival, with author readings, panel discussions, and workshops spread out over four weeks, a good excuse to check out a library or bookstore you haven’t been to yet.
If beer and bratwurst are more your speed, Oktoberfest at Snowbird runs every Saturday and Sunday (plus Labor Day) from August 8 through October 11. The mountain backdrop does a lot of the work here: live Bavarian music, German food, and canyon views that are just starting to turn color by the tail end of the run.
For a whimsical Halloween, WitchFest at Gardner Village runs September 18 through October 31. The whole village becomes a witch-themed wonderland, with scavenger hunts, weekend entertainment, and enough photo backdrops to fill a phone’s camera roll. It’s one of Utah’s better fall festivals for families with younger kids who want spooky without it being scary.
Speaking of family-friendly, Cornbelly’s at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi opens September 21 and runs through October 31. With a corn maze, pumpkin patch, and enough fall-themed activities to fill a full afternoon, it’s a short drive south but worth the trip if you haven’t been.
Utah’s Hogle Zoo also gets in on the season with Halloween-themed evening events running select nights through October, including pumpkin displays and glowing nighttime installations. Costumes are encouraged, and it’s built to be festive rather than frightening.
If you’re after real scares, Fear Factory in downtown Salt Lake opens for the season on September 18 and runs select nights through November 1. It’s consistently ranked among the scariest haunted houses in the country, with multiple attractions and escape rooms if one haunted walkthrough isn’t enough.
You don’t need an event ticket for any of this, either. The Downtown Farmers Market at Pioneer Park runs Saturdays through October 24, with produce, pumpkins, and local goods. Some vendor spots have shifted slightly while the park’s ongoing upgrades continue, but the market itself is running as usual. And for scenery you don’t have to pay for, Big Cottonwood Canyon, Millcreek Canyon, and the Alpine Loop are hard to beat for fall color, typically peaking sometime between late September and mid-October depending on elevation.
